Managing Diabetes When You Are Sick


If you are sick and want to know some tips on how to maintain your diabetes.  Here are a couple of quick pointers that I learned from experience and some good articles from About.com

  • Stay hydrated- drink lots of water
  • continue to take you medication unless your blood sugar is much lower than usual
  • check you blood sugar every 4-6 hours
  • test and track your ketone levels and blood sugar levels
  • if you cannot hold anything down or are sick for more than 24hrs, call you health care physician

When to call your doctor; You might want to call your doctor if

  • illness that last longer than 1-2 days
  • fever
  • severe nausea
  • dehydration
  • excess urination or thirst
  • labored breathing
  • worsening of symptoms
